Major national and international sporting events held in Canada provide tremendous opportunities to promote Canadian culture and celebrate the importance of our two official languages while promoting the vitality of the countryís English- and French-speaking communities.

Looking at Canadaís linguistic makeup, it is clear that official languages must be taken into account if an event is to be representative of the entire country.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • In Canada, more than seven million people (about one quarter of the population) speak French as their first official language, and about three quarters of the population speaks English as a first official language.

  • About two million people live in official language minority communities: Anglophones in Quebec and Francophones living in the other nine provinces and three territories.

  • Using English and French, itís possible to communicate with more than 98% of Canadians.
