Stephen Harper’s federal government eliminates the mandatory long-form census questionnaire

It will now be more difficult to obtain specific data on official language minority communities.

For the 2011 Census, the mandatory long-form questionnaire was replaced by a voluntary survey called the National Household Survey. However, pressure from the Commissioner of Official Languages and official language minority community organizations resulted in the addition of two language-related questions to the mandatory short-form questionnaire.

Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government would reinstate the mandatory long-form questionnaire in time for the 2016 Census.
