The Official Languages Regulations are adopted
The government adopts the Official Languages (Communications with and Services to the Public) Regulations.
Following an extensive consultation process, the Regulations set out the circumstances in which federal institutions are required to provide services in both official languages.
Federal offices must meet this requirement when there is a “significant demand
” for communications with services from that office in both English and French or when the nature of the office justifies the provision of bilingual services (e.g., public health and safety).
The Regulations also set out specific rules regarding services to the travelling public.
