Katimavik is created

The youth exchange program arranges community work placements across the country for thousands of young Canadians and encourages second-language learning.

Katimavik is one of several youth exchange initiatives that have brought young Canadians from diverse backgrounds together over the decades and helped them improve their knowledge of Canada’s official languages.

Katimavik was founded by social activist Jacques Hébert and received federal funding until 2012.

Some 35,000 young Canadians have participated in its programs.
