Canada hosts the Pan American Games for the first time

From July 23 to August 6, Winnipeg, Manitoba, hosts the 5th Pan American Games.

Thousands of athletes from across the Americas competed in 21 sports. Prince Philip opened the most important international competition to ever take place in Canada’s history until that time.

Canadian athletes certainly made their mark. Sixteen-year-old swimmer Elaine Tanner set two new world records and collected five medals, including two golds. Harry Jerome also won gold in the 100 metres, as did Andy Boychuk in the marathon.
