FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, February 11, 2010 – The Commissioner of Official Languages, Graham Fraser, is pleased today with the conclusion of an agreement that will allow for equitable access to French-language broadcasts of the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic games, thanks to the CPAC television service.
“This is a fine example of cooperation between private corporations, Francophone community groups and the Olympic Movement,” said Mr. Fraser. “Thanks to this agreement, Francophones across the country will—just like their Anglophone counterparts—have full access, in their language, to televised reports on the Olympic Games on a channel accessible to all cable television subscribers.”
“I congratulate all these partners for coming up with an innovative way to guarantee equitable access to this great event for all Canadians,” concluded Mr. Fraser. “Everybody kept an open mind. By agreeing to broadcast the signal, CPAC showed its remarkable commitment to the country and to linguistic duality,” said Mr. Fraser.
In fact, CPAC and CTV Globemedia announced today that the Olympic Games will be aired in French on the public affairs channel CPAC, as well as on RDS and V. This agreement stems from discussions that included the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada, their member associations throughout the country, CTV Globemedia, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as well as the country’s major cable companies, including Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications.
