Language rights with federally regulated private businesses

Note: The Use of French in Federally Regulated Private Businesses Act is not yet in force. It will not come into force until an order is issued by the Governor in Council and regulations are adopted.

The purpose of the Use of French in Federally Regulated Private Businesses Act is to protect the language rights of Francophone consumers and Francophone employees of federally regulated private businesses in Quebec and, eventually, in regions with a strong Francophone presence outside Quebec.

Once the Act is in force, it will entrust the Commissioner with the mission of ensuring the recognition and respect of the rights set out in the Use of French in Federally Regulated Private Businesses Act.

As part of this mission, the Commissioner will be able to investigate complaints filed with his office and, in some cases, conduct investigations on his own initiative.
